Part 5 – Results

Similar to the analogy of a tree falling in the woods, if you can’t see someone sitting at their desk hammering away at the keyboard or talking on the phone, how do you know they are really working?

That, in a nutshell, is the dilemma remote workers face daily. Fortunately, there are plenty of other ways to measure output and productivity, other than directly eyeballing someone in an office environment. My experience at LegalVision shows how results can be measured in different ways.

Remote work results are all about metrics and trust rather than physical visibility.

Communicating results a different way

When an organisation hires remote workers, thought needs to be given at the outset as to how results will be communicated and measured.

With the right set of circumstances and skill set, remote and flexible workers are often better candidates to hire because they don’t take up office space, meaning, in crude economic terms, they “cost less to run”. In practical terms, this means an organisation can potentially exist without an office (in the case of many startups or soloists) or expand its employee base without adding to the real estate costs of expansion, subsequently freeing up more money for salaries and business development.

The remote work culture also helps challenge the status quo of an organisation. Constant thought must be given as to the best way to include and engage remote employees.
